Brest is the largest city in the south-western part of Belarus. Territory of the city is composed by 1/3 of industrial buildings and modern blocks of flats, by 1/3 of houses typical for the rural areas and by 1/3 of rivers, channels, bushy and forested areas. On the west the city adjoins large and almost intact floodplain of the West Bug river. Main part of old Brest fortress is located here also.
In 1995-1999 there were registered 8 species of Chiroptera on wintering in Brest. During winter season up to 5000 individuals stay in Brest and vicinity what makes it a most important region of Belarus for wintering of Chiroptera. For the first time in Belarus wintering of such species as Eptesicus nilssonii, Myotis dasycneme, Myotis nattereri was registered here.
The most important trait of wintering of Chiroptera in the city and vicinity is absence of stable hibernation and the ability of 5 species to live actively during the winter season. As ringing and registration in 1996-1998 showed (approximately 1,2 thousand individuals were ringed) bats don't stay in one place for more than 3 days. Usually they move around an area of 100-150 ha.
An interesting cycle of shifts of winter shelters of Barbastella barbastellus was found. This species is the most stable and plastic.
Eptesicus serotinus is the most vulnerable species during winter season. This species makes 80% of records of Chiroptera at non-suitable wintering places and out of shelters: on the streets, roads, in back yards.
